The interactive-relational approach to interviewing provides an innovative method for deepening the interviewing process and for presenting the experiences of such interviewing. Developed from interview experiences with Lucille Ball and B. F. Skinner, this approach identifies the qualities that account for the interaction and relationship that together provide a unique "inner view" of the interviewee.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The interactive-relational approach to interviewing provides an innovative method for deepening the interviewing process and for presenting the experiences of such interviewing. Developed from interview experiences with Lucille Ball and B. F. Skinner, this approach identifies the qualities that account for the interaction and relationship that together provide a unique "inner view" of the interviewee.

The interactive-relational approach is presented as a teachable approach that offers sufficient structure to assure the aims of a professional interview and the flexibility to encourage the greatest possible involvement by the participants. The elements of this approach are (1) effective listening skills, (2) the interactive-relational model of communication, (3) the development of both a professional and a personal relationship, (4) a "special friendship" between the interviewer and interviewee, (5) the transcription of the interactions, which results in the "audible text," (6) the identification of the personal characteristics of the interviewer that affect the interviewing process, and (7) the implementation of these characteristics in the encounter.

This study shows how the genuine characteristics of the interviewer and interviewee are revealed through their interaction and relationship in the interviewing process. Such characteristics contribute to a deeper understanding of the interviewee. Each interviewer needs to identify the unique characteristics that he/she brings to an interview compared to theories for interviewing and "how-to" approaches alone. This study also examines the personal characteristics that I bring to an interview in light of my interviewing and clinical experiences and my interviews with Lucille Ball and B. F. Skinner.

The interactive-relational approach is not a fixed theory but a particular way to interview. This approach expects the interviewer to ask questions of the interviewee and to explore the particular characteristics that he/she has that encourage the support and reciprocal involvement of the interviewee. This manner of interviewing parallels one's continuous evolution as a person.

The application of this approach ranges from professional interviewers in psychotherapy, media communications, journalism, and teaching to dealing with personal relationships. The interactive-relational approach focuses upon the interviewee as a person in a life encounter.
