The Problem. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the uses of self in the Judeo-Christian scriptures and in the personality theories of Sigmund Freud; Carl R. Rogers, and B. F. Skinner add up to themes of self which are similar or different. 520 $a The Problem. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the uses of self in the Judeo-Christian scriptures and in the personality theories of Sigmund Freud; Carl R. Rogers, and B. F. Skinner add up to themes of self which are similar or different. 520 $a Method. The research methodology employed in this study was to use the tool of context analysis to determine the significant words appearing in the immediate context of "self" or its synonyms in the Biblical writings and in selected writings of three personality theorists: Freud, Rogers, and Skinner.
520 $a Results. The significant words which appeared most frequently in the context of "self" and its synonyms in the Biblical writings and in the writings of the three personality theorists were listed according to frequency, arranged according to themes, reexamined in their original contexts, and then compared and contrasted according to eight polarities. The following conclusions concerning similarities and differences were drawn for the eight polarities:
520 $a Holistic vs. Analytic. The Judeo-Christian writers tended to have a holistic view of the self whereas Freud had an analytic view. Nestled between these two polarities were the viewpoints of Rogers and Skinner.
520 $a Community vs. Individual. The Biblical authors were writing in a setting which placed heavy emphasis upon the community. Freud and Rogers emphasized the individual and Skinner emphasized both the community and the individual but considered the individual's environment to be more important than the individual in determining behavior.
520 $a Freedom vs. Control. Rogers placed his stress on freedom whereas Skinner stressed control. Freud and the Biblical writers placed emphasis on control but also felt the individual has some degree of freedom of choice.
520 $a Good vs. Evil. Values of good and evil were important for Biblical authors and were often specified. Rogers demonstrated an interest in organismic values common to human beings. Freud and Skinner were more interested in the formation and transmission of values than in identifying specific values.
520 $a Life vs. Death. The life-death polarity was very important for Biblical writers and for Freud. Rogers avoided the subject of death. Skinner dealt with the life-death polarity from a cultural point of view. The Biblical writers had a special emphasis upon life after death.
520 $a Love vs. Hate. Love and hate were very important in Biblical thought. Freud viewed love and hate as expressions of the life and death instincts, respectively. Rogers considered it important to experience rather than to deny feelings of love and hate. He felt that love characterizes the deepest level of self. Rogers and the Biblical authors both recognized the therapeutic power of love. Skinner briefly mentioned love and hate, conceiving of them as predispositions to behave in specific ways.
520 $a Conscious vs. Unconscious. Freud stressed the conscious and unconscious far more than did any of the other writers. Biblical writers had a rudimentary understanding of these concepts. Rogers and Skinner indicated that the conscious and unconscious could be understood according to their respective theories.
520 $a Theocentric vs. Anthropocentric. Old and New Testament authors were theocentric but also demonstrated a deep concern for the human being. Freud, Rogers, and Skinner had an anthropocentric rather than theocentric emphasis in their writings.
