Thesis (M.S.W.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2010.
This curriculum was designed to educate mental health professionals about youth who self-injure. The purpose of the curriculum is to provide them with general information about self-injury, social components which could influence the act of self-injury, and practical tools that could be used with clients who self-injure. There is a need for trainings on self-injury due to the significant increase of adolescents who engage in self-injurious behavior. It is also important to be able to understand the different reasons that adolescents engage in this behavior. The first section of the curriculum addresses general information about self-injury and perceptions society might conceive of people who self-injure. The second section of the curriculum focuses on the influence of media on the act of self-injury. The third section of the curriculum targets different diagnoses that have been associated with self-injury; and it also provides different assessment tools and treatment strategies that could be implemented when working with clients who self-injure.
