This research explored gay men's experience of negative parental reactions to their disclosure of gay identity. Although research suggests that initial parental reactions to the disclosure of a son's gay identity are usually negative, and that such negative reactions are associated with distress in gay sons, there is a lack of descriptions of the family disclosure crisis from the perspective of gay men. This inquiry fills this gap in the literature and illuminates the way in which gay men cope and make meaning of their experiences with negative family reactions following disclosure. Qualitative data were gathered during semi-structured interviews with a convenience-based sample of seven self-identified gay men who disclosed or acknowledged their gay identity to unsupportive or rejecting parents between one and eight years ago. The study utilized a modified form of poetic inquiry rooted in narrative research. Pre-disclosure, disclosure, post-disclosure, and coping and meaning-making narratives shared by participants were categorized into themes. Results consisted of narratives, presented as poetic transcriptions elaborated with interpretive poems. Pre-disclosure narratives included narratives about (a) participants' first encounters with the concept of homosexuality, (b) encountering attitudes toward homosexuality and gender discordant behavior, (c) the challenges of self-discovery, and (d) participants' concerns related to disclosing their gay identity to their parents. Disclosure narratives included descriptions of participants' moments of disclosure. These narratives capture (a) participants' motivation to come out; (b) their encounter with parental denial, homophobia, and misinformation about homosexuality; (c) the affectively-charged quality of the disclosure moment; and (d) the role of intervening allies. Post-disclosure narratives elaborated (a) the challenges of negotiating post-disclosure relationships with parents, (b) participants' emotional responses to negative parental reactions, (c) participants' efforts to understand and make sense of their parents' reactions, (d) the effects of negative parental reactions, and (d) the role of supportive others. Narratives of coping and meaning-making described positive and negative methods participants employed to deal with negative parental reactions, and the meanings participants ascribed to their experiences.
