Thesis (M.A.)--Prescott College, 2011.
Sense of place is an essential component of developing ecological literacy (knowledge and experience contributing to stewardship and empowerment). This thesis demonstrates how education and structured experiences can help individuals deepen their sense of place in a new environment. Traditionally, people lived in one place or region for much of their life and this inherently encouraged the development of strong personal emotional, cognitive, and physical connections with that place. In modern society, this is no longer the case. Many people move often and extensively and multiple places may influence each individual throughout their lives. There is a need to consider other forms of sense of place and other perspectives on how it may develop. This thesis uses heuristic inquiry to explore and understand the author's personal development of a sense of place in a new environment. Research findings are then applied in the context of a program, Stories of Place, which uses structured experiences and educational opportunities to increase participant understanding and awareness of stories embedded in the local bioregion while encouraging stronger emotional connections through the creation of personal stories related to experiences of place. Stories of Place focuses on sense of place development over a short period of time and suggests that even short-term visitors (or people moving frequently) can develop a form of sense of place in a new natural environment.
