A group of landscape artists originally operating out of Ft. Pierce, Florida, received the moniker of "The Highwaymen" in 1975 from art critic James Fitch. Since then interest in the group has increased tremendously.

520 $a A problem occurred when a publication named twenty-six painters as Highwaymen, and the same twenty-six painters were inducted into the Florida Art Hall of Fame. Several of the artists who paint with "official" Highwaymen and several of the "official" twenty-six named artists take exception with the first publication as well as with the Florida Art Hall of Fame for determining the original group. Numerous publications and conversations with the artists show that artist Jimmy Stovall has legitimate claim to inclusion in the groups' official count and, furthermore, though artists, authors, critics, and dealers disagree as to whether Harold Newton or Alfred Hair was the original Highwayman, Al Hair originated the group.
