Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2011.
This study explored the success strategies used by women who have achieved executive status in the financial services industry. While previous research has been conducted on the success strategies of women, none of the previous studies identified and analyzed the success strategies used by women in the financial services industry. This study used a phenomenological qualitative interview research design and targeted women who had already reached the executive status of senior vice-president or higher within the financial services industry. Four research questions were addressed: (a) What are the success strategies used by women who have achieved executive status in the financial services industry?, (b) What obstacles do women who have achieved executive status in the financial services industry face?, (c) How did women who have achieved executive status in the financial services industry overcome these obstacles?, (d) What recommendations do these women have for other women who are working to achieve executive status in the financial services industry? Data were collected using a structured interview guide during telephone interviews with 22 executive women. The findings show many of the same success factors and obstacles as identified in previous research for other areas. This research was exploratory and by that not meant to solve any issues, it was to investigate how women who have achieved success in the financial services were able to do so and to determine if there is future value in additional research. Based on the findings, additional future research would be warranted specifically in training programs for women leaders and mentor programs.
