More health care providers are needed to meet the growing demand for health care services in the United States. Physician assistants (PAs) are health care professionals who provide medical care with physician supervision. A PA program's ability to prepare highly qualified health care providers is hampered by a lack of information regarding the relationship of student performance in selected PA courses and on the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE). With a conceptual framework of assessment, a review of 5 years of final course grades and PANCE scores from existing records of 155 graduates was conducted. In this quantitative, retrospective, and correlational study, a multiple regression analysis demonstrated a significant predictive relationship between PANCE scores and final course grades in Principles of Clinical Medicine I and II, Medical History and Physical Examination, and Pharmacology I and II (p < 0.001). The study results also showed that final grades in selected courses accounted for 40.3% of the variance in the PANCE scores and that Pharmacology I contributed the most to the variance. This study adds to the literature in PA education regarding factors likely to predict success on the PANCE. Moreover, the study results also suggest the importance of assessment early in the PA educational process to identify students who may benefit from remediation strategies in selected classes to help them succeed in the PA program and pass the PANCE the first time. This study may contribute to social change by contributing to an increase in the number of highly qualified PAs who can help meet the growing demand for health care services and providers in the United States and around the world.
