John Cassavetes, through his personality, his ambition and his work, represents what Gramsci has coined a "site of struggle". A successful Hollywood actor, appearing in pop culture hits such as The Dirty Dozen (Robert Aldrich, 1967) and Rosemary's Baby (Roman Polanski, 1968), he however chose to depart Tinseltown, weary of its systematic commodification processes and business logic. By creating his own alternative method of producing, he gave himself the tools to create an art that was meaningful in advocating human values over market values. With all his heart, skills, sensitivity, passion, money and hopes, he unknowingly paved the way for what has since been called the "Independent Cinema" movement.
