The following study was conducted using a qualitative case study methodology and design. The purpose of the study was to identify characteristics of effective alternative school teachers in rural Georgia. In order to accomplish this goal, the researcher identified two rural alternative education schools that used a nationally recognized academic assessment. In this case the assessment was the Test of Adult Basic Education skills or TABE. The TABE identified which of the alternative education teachers were judged to be effective based upon student success. The results from the TABE scores were analyzed using SPSS Graduate Pack 15.0 for Windows software. Once the effective teachers had been identified, questionnaires were presented to the educators to complete. The questionnaires had 71 basic competencies or characteristics that were then broken down into three categories: importance, proficiency, and frequency. Each category was then weighted on a 1 to 4 level scale of value. The questionnaires were then analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2007 and a final calibration of 11 effective characteristics of alternative educators was created. The educators from the two rural alternative schools then participated in one-on-one interviews with the researcher. The interviews were analyzed by segmenting and lean coding the interview transcriptions. These interviews allowed the researcher to gain greater insight into the human phenomenon of alternative education teachers. The results of the interviews analysis was the creation of an outline to assist alternative education administrators in selecting the best educator for an alternative education teaching position. The conclusions formulated from the data gathered in this study also provided ideas for future professional development workshops for alternative education teachers.
