Thesis (M.A.)--University of California, Davis, 2010.
This study examines the environment of one community college (CC) English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom in an aim to understand how one instructor works with the diverse English proficiency levels and goals of the students, while simultaneously working within the constraints of being an adjunct instructor. Studying this environment is critical because CC ESL students are less likely than their native-English speaking peers to attain their goals of a certificate or transfer to a four-year institution (Bogue-Feinour, 2008), and most likely to be taught by adjunct instructors, who often times work multiple jobs at many institutions, which could deprive them of the time and reflection needed to provide students with effective lessons (Ariza, et al., 2008; Cooper, 2001; Pratt-Johnson, 2006; Spinetta, 1990). Working with ethnographic methods of second language research, I posit that implementing a symbiotic curriculum between language socialization and language acquisition will give students power and a voice in the classroom, which in turn will better assist them in attaining their academic and vocational goals through English language education.
