Thesis (Ed.D.)--Arcadia University, 2011.
How do those students who have received their special education program while attending a partial hospital program, and have since graduated, negotiate the transition to adulthood? Using a qualitative research design, this case study examines the postsecondary outcomes of three young adults who spent two or more years of their adolescence in a partial hospital program where they participated in a set of coordinated activities meant to facilitate improved post-school outcomes. Data collection for this study involves multiple sources, including archival data, multiple interviews, observation, physical artifacts, a survey, and a life-satisfaction questionnaire. The outcomes examined include employment and educational status, independent living, social supports, and ongoing mental health management. Results are considered in terms of an examination of partial hospital outcomes and the participants' perspectives about the partial hospital program. Their perspectives may suggest directions in transition planning for students with mental health disorders. (Key words: partial hospital, mental health, mental illness, special education, emotional support, mental health disorders, post-secondary transition, qualitative research design, case study, protective factors)
