Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2010.
In this qualitative phenomenological research study, spirituality as a means of coping with past experiences of childhood sexual abuse was explored. The researcher gained participants through purposeful sample. Eight individuals participated. The researcher interviewed adult female survivors to gain description of the experience of spirituality as a coping resource. Interview material was audio-recorded and transcribed for analysis. The transcendental phenomenological method guided the analysis of data (Moustakas, 1994). Female survivors of childhood sexual abuse often experience psychopathology in adulthood that can interfere with daily healthy functioning (Banyard, Williams, & Siegel, 2001; Briere & Runtz, 1993; Browne & Finkelhor, 1986; Masho & Ahmed, 2007; Messian & Grella; O'Brien, Henderson, & Bateman, 2007; Van der Kolk, 2005). Some common effects noted in female adult survivors include mood disturbances, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, substance abuse (Briere & Spinazzola, 2005), depression (Bifulco et al., 2006), dissociation (Hetzel & McCanne, 2005), and impaired social functioning (Abdulrehman & DeLuca, 2001). Some individuals may have the ability to cope with such difficulties thus alleviating psychopathological responses (Bonanno, 2004; Collishaw et al., 2007; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984; Masten, 2007). The transactional theory of stress and coping, and the theory of resilience were included as a means of understanding individual response to difficulties as well as coping. Results emerged into four themes: defining of spirituality, childhood sexual abuse effects on adulthood, coping before spirituality, and coping by use of spirituality. Participants identified spirituality as important to coping, and presented elements, attributes, and outcomes related to coping. Discussion includes limitations and suggestions for further research.
