Thesis (M.S.)--The College of St. Scholastica, 2010.
The purpose of this study was to determine the cardiovascular effects of relaxing music at rest after exposure to a mental stressor. Ten subjects (6 female, 4 male) participated in the study. Each subject was monitored using a metabolic cart. The data were gathered for 5 minutes to determine baseline values. Monitoring was continued for 3 minutes during exposure to the stressor and then for 15 minutes during the treatment or control. The following variables were identified: VO2, Q, HR, SV, a-vO2 diff, SBP, DBP, MAP, SVR, DP, VCO2, VE, TV, and Fb. An independent t test was performed on the data to test if there were any significant differences (p<.05) between the treatment and control groups. No statistically significant difference between the two groups was observed. Since the means of the groups failed to reach statistical significance, relaxing music after exposure to a mental stressor did not produce a relaxing effect.
