Thesis (M.S.)--The College of St. Scholastica, 2010.
The purpose of this study was to determine if verbal encouragement had any significant effect on performance during a Wingate test with respect to two independent variables, gender and training level. Twenty subjects were divided into four separate groups of five: male trained, male untrained, female trained, and female untrained. Each subject performed two Wingate tests on two separate days, with at least 48 hours between tests. One test provided verbal encouragement (treatment) and the other provided no verbal encouragement (control). The following variables were recorded and calculated: total number of pedal revolutions, peak anaerobic power, relative peak anaerobic power, mean anaerobic power, relative mean anaerobic power, and fatigue index. A two-way ANOVA of independent variables was used to determine if any significant (p<.05) differences between the treatment and control tests occurred in any of the dependent variables. The results showed no significant differences for any of the six variables for any of the groups evaluated. Therefore, it was concluded that verbal encouragement had no significant effect on Wingate performance with respect to gender and/or training level.
