Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northwestern University, 2009.
American children's experience of family structure has changed dramatically over the last 50 years, with detrimental consequences for children not spending their whole childhoods with two married parents. This dissertation presents the results from three studies, two quantitative and one qualitative, that explore the processes at work in families with varied structures. In the first study, analysis of data from a large national dataset suggests that changes in family structure during middle-childhood/adolescence cause worse outcomes in young adulthood, but finds no evidence for parenting as a mediator of this link. The second and third studies explore coparenting in families with varying structures. Coparenting involves parents' behavior when they are together and how they coordinate parenting when they are apart. Previous research has linked coparenting to improved child well-being. In the second study, I examine the link between parental relationship quality, coparenting, and family structure for unmarried and married parents. While levels of coparenting are lower in families with parents that have broken up, parental relationship quality predicts coparenting quality in both intact and, especially, nonintact families. The final study uses qualitative data to examine how parents of two-year-olds coparent in their daily lives, and if coparenting differs by family structure. While some parents who live together (married and unmarried) coparent, more demonstrate parallel parenting, where each parent parents in their own way, with little coordination of individual parenting. Many of the parents (both men and women) marginalize the caretaking work done by fathers, often calling it babysitting. Finally, there was little evidence of maternal gatekeeping.
