Perfectionism has long been recognized as an important factor in relation to various types of psychopathology among adults. However, less is known about perfectionism among children and adolescents. The purpose of the present study was threefold. First, a self-report measure of childhood perfectionism called the Childhood Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (C-MPS), corresponding to dimensions identified in adults (Frost, Marten, Lahart, and Rosenblate, 1990), was developed and assessed for its psychometric properties. Second, the current study investigated risk factors, including parental perfectionism and specific parental behaviors, in children's perfectionism. Third, this study examined the relationship between perfectionism and psychopathology among children. Two samples were used. Sample 1 included 367 participants between the ages of 7 and 12. Sample 2 included 34 participants between the ages of 7 and 12 with one parent or primary caregiver who also completed measures. The C-MPS was found to be reliable (alpha = .90) and was more highly correlated with general measures of anxiety, measures of obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and specific subscales measuring constructs related to perfectionism than to subscales measuring specific fears and depression. Factor analysis identified some dimensions that were similar to those of adult samples (concern over mistakes, doubts about actions, organization, and parental expectations), but others that were unique to children (goal orientation, performance evaluation, and maladaptive striving). No relationship was found between parental and childhood perfectionism. However, childhood perfectionism was related to key psychopathology indicators in children. Taken together these findings suggest that the C-MPS is a reliable and valid instrument for the measurement of perfectionism in young children. Perfectionism shares similar dimensions with established factors among adults, and is related to psychopathology even at early ages.
