This qualitative study focuses on identifying the leadership factors present within schools that contribute to the large scale success of English language learners. An embedded multiple case study design with single and cross-case analyses were utilized. While there is similar literature addressing success of younger English language learner students at the elementary school level, there is markedly less research as these students continue through the public school system. The educational needs of students change over time and research must reflect the differing needs of students at varying developmental stages in their lives. The purpose of this research was to investigate the characteristics of high school principals who lead campuses that are successful in creating academic achievement among English language learners. This study encompasses two participating school districts in Texas based on academic achievement ratings and student population demographics. Though differing in the philosophy of teaching second language learners, similar characteristics and practices emerged in both schools. Factors contributing to the success of English language learners at both schools were positive school climate and community support. Additionally, both schools planned for student success and implemented steps to attain it utilizing a student centered approach. Though they espouse differing philosophies, both schools demonstrated exceptional levels of success and continuous improvement over time.
