Thesis (M.S.W.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2010.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between sexual identity and depression among Vietnamese-American gay and bisexual (VAGB) males between the age of 19 and 35 years old. The sample included 30 Vietnamese-American gay and bisexual men residing in Orange County, California. The participants completed self- administered questionnaires that consisted of demographic questions, questions regarding level of depression, and perception of self-identity. The results did not reveal any significant correlation between sexual identity and depression. However, there was a negative association between level of depression and age. The younger participants reported higher levels of depression. It is hoped that the results of this study will assist social workers and community leaders in providing pertinent information for the development of programs to facilitate positive adjustment among members of the VAGB community. The findings suggested a need for further research to more thoroughly explore the correlation between sexual identity and depression among Vietnamese- American gay and bisexual males.
