Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Kentucky, 2009.
In today's constantly changing environment, an organization's supply chain agility is a critical element affecting its global competitiveness. To fully appreciate modem roles of supply chain agility in business, this dissertation addresses two key research questions: (1) What is supply chain agility? (2) How do firms achieve supply chain agility ? It does so by integrating four research streams --theories of dynamic capabilities, configuration theories, social network theories, and entrepreneurship studies.

A comprehensive literature review is conducted for the conceptual development of supply chain agility. To investigate the antecedents of supply chain agility, data are collected from senior supply-chain executives. The data are both quantitative (survey of the executives) and qualitative (case studies with these executives in the form of in-depth interviews). Data analyses include case descriptions, case comparisons, Confirmative Factor Analyses, hierarchical regressions and so forth.

This dissertation generates a general-purpose definition of supply chain agility and the attributes of this construct. This definition is a unifying synthesis of notions in prior research. This dissertation provides empirical supports that a firm's work design configuration and network entrepreneurship orientation play important roles in influencing the firm's supply chain agility. These linkages have not heretofore been established. Based on the empirical results from this study, a framework characterizing the foundations of supply chain agility is introduced.

This dissertation broadens our view of supply chain agility. It contributes to theory, methodology, and practice. First, this dissertation provides the promise of expanding the research stream on supply chain agility. Based on the new and solid theoretical conceptualizations of supply chain agility, researchers can develop metrics and investigate the relationships between supply chain agility and other relevant variables. Second, this dissertation introduces a useful methodology for using multiple case studies to both establish and test theories regarding a firm's dynamic capabilities (supply chain agility and supply chain alertness in this dissertation).

Third, results from this study can guide a firm's supply chain management initiatives for using work design mechanisms (e.g., internal work design configuration and external information networks for work design) as powerful tools for achieving supply chain agility.
