Industrial ecology is a relatively new field in which concepts and tools have been developed to evaluate the sustainability of current industrial practices and delineate paths toward more sustainable industrial development. Sustainability in a geographic region implies the maintenance of healthy natural ecosystem functions and desirable economic and social opportunities for human inhabitants.

Industrial ecologists have used the organization of natural ecosystems as a metaphor to understand how regional industrial systems (or industrial ecosystems) are structured and function. Industrial symbiosis refers to the coordinated management of physical resources (energy, water and materials) among firms in an industrial ecosystem. My research builds on ecological theory by drawing insights from economic geography, organizational sociology and complex systems theory. I examine the evolution of organizational structures within regional industrial ecosystems and measure the economic and environmental performance of industrial symbiosis activities.

My research contributes to the IE literature by presenting a holistic view of industrial ecosystem evolution from an exploitation phase through a conservation stage during which industrial symbiosis develops. This is followed by a collapse phase in which there is a breakdown of structures and a mobilization phase that closes the cycle by redistributing resources.

The research includes the first social network analysis of industrial ecosystem organization. It demonstrates that the three main industrial symbiosis activities---byproduct exchanges, utility sharing and service sharing---have different network configurations. It also indicates that supply chain relations, though more commonplace in the regional network than industrial symbiosis activities, are less correlated with trust than symbiosis.

In measuring the economic and environmental benefits of industrial symbiosis activities, the research highlights circumstances where some of these initiatives fail to meet performance expectations. It also demonstrates that changing conditions in an industrial ecosystem may reintroduce technical, economic, regulatory and motivational barriers that were previously overcome, making symbiosis activities less attractive.

The research highlights the need to understand, holistically, both a region's stage in evolutionary development, and the economic and social structures that are present to coordinate more sustainable resource management practices. It supports ongoing, independent evaluation of industrial symbiosis initiatives to ensure that they meet economic, environmental and social performance expectations.
