Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Idaho, 1990.
A multidimensional finite element model of an arc plasma reactor is described in this document. Unlike the numerical models before it, the model presented is developed to account for the electron current and magnetic field effects in a general manner. Unlike its predecessors, the model described is designed to assess fully developed or developing velocity fields in two or three dimensions. The model discussed in this document is characterized by several assumptions and simplifications including: steady flow, convection (or advection) dominated axial fluid velocities and the existence of local thermodynamic equilibrium between the elements comprising the plasma gas. Nevertheless, results from the exact solutions to several flow problems compared with the results from the finite element model indicate the model is appropriately accounting for underlying phenomena including the effects of the magnetic and electrical fields. In addition data from plasma torch experiments are compared with calculated results from the model. These latter comparisons indicate the model can be usefully applied to such engineering applications with the net result being a better understanding of the plasma state.Subjects--Topical Terms:
