Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Chicago, 2007.
A literature review was undertaken surrounding the topic of postmodernity, the construction of reality and the construction of self within the out-of-school curriculum. These essays work to interpret some dominant languages within society manifested through the themes of self, patriotism, expansion, and democracy. The first section of the dissertation focuses on the development of symbolic languages. The second section focuses on the development of self and the orientation of self in relation to the world. The third section focuses on the language of patriotism and attempts to define the shifting empathetic consciousness of America. The fourth collection of essays focuses on the language of expansion by looking at personal and corporate consumption. The fifth collection of essays examines the language of democracy by looking at America's democratic failures, inspirations and the role of schools as democratic institutions. Finally I conclude with a section on methodology and an autobiographical bibliography as way to chronicle my own evolution within the ideas of these essays. These themes are described and explored through autobiographical and speculative essay methodologies.
