Psychotherapy lacks a coherent, unified method to describe the talk that occurs during the clinical hour---both that of the therapist and the patient. Very little psychotherapeutic literature provides actual transcripts of therapeutic conversation. As a result, psychotherapists generally do not seek to increase awareness of their own verbal and nonverbal behavior. The field of Conversation Analysis (CA) can fill in some of the gaps in the literature by better explicating both therapist and patient speech behavior. Most current CA research falls under the category of interactional sociolinguistics, the study of discourse as it is constructed and co-constructed in the language of everyday interaction. CA investigates language as it is embedded in its social and institutional context. Notated transcripts of speech are used, and every effort is made to capture the nuances of spoken language, from pauses to pitch changes. This dissertation provides a synthesis of findings from conversation analyses of therapeutic interactions in the form of a training manual educating clinicians in its therapeutic applications. The major focus will be on the therapist's speech role, and how patient respond within their own reciprocal role.
