Often, before moving forward on a topic, it is necessary to look back, reflecting on past events to progress to a stronger future. Recent studies from scientists such as Posner and Rothbart (2007), Levitin (2008), and Patel (2008) have shown new ways of viewing the workings of the brain when it relates to language and music. By using Rury's (2006) four-step process of historical inquiry, this study looks at a 50-year period of time in music education and the music culture of Texas to track the research and events from 1950-1999 to generate new ideas for improving student thought processes and to increase the amount of creativity and imagination needed in secondary students in an ever-changing society and world.
