Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 2010.
This dissertation offers an in-depth examination of the under-explored genre of French rural film. The study begins in the early 1970s when the rural region of Larzac made national news as farmers in the area protested the French government's plan to install a military training base. The struggles in Larzac paired French film and the countryside as many amateur filmmakers flocked to the area to record the historic events. Lanny not only inspired many rural documentary and fiction films, but it also gave birth to a small corpus of writings about French rural film in which the genre was described and theorized for the first time.

This dissertation both recounts the history of rural film and explores the cultural significance of images of the French countryside. Films about the land and French country life often embody national values and pride. They are extremely popular with both French and international audiences who often view them as cultural treasures or as the essence of "Frenchness." This project examines the GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) negotiations between France and the United States in the mid 1990s because of the way in which several French rural fiction films served as powerful weapons in these heated cultural debates. The study also analyzes recent trends in rural documentary filmmaking where a preoccupation with ecology is beginning to redefine and reinvigorate traditional French cultural values.

This project is divided into two large parts dedicated to both fiction films and documentaries. The fiction section deals in particular with rural heritage films, which are high-budget commercial costume dramas based on literary adaptations of bucolic writers such as Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono. The second section analyses the work of rural documentary filmmakers Georges Rouquier, Bernard Dartigues, Jean-Henri Meunier, and Raymond Depardon. Each of these artists has recorded French farm and village life over long spans of time during the last thirty years.
