Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Utah, 2011.
This dissertation examines the economic, social, and environmental imbalances associated with the model of the development that China has adopted since 1978. The first essay aims to understand what dynamics of class power and class relations underlie the rapid economic growth and sustained capital accumulation achieved in the post-1978 economic system. This essay uses a time-series analysis to assess the relationship between industrial productivity and industrial wage share in China between 1980 and 2007, and to identify the determinants of the industrial wage share over the same period. The results suggest that the market reforms in China have led to a reduction in workers' bargaining power, which in turn explains both the rapid productivity increase and the steady decline in the wage share observed since the beginning of the market reforms. The results also suggest that privatization, labor market informalization, and retreat of the State from social provisioning are key factors explaining the decline in the wage share over the reform period. The current Chinese model of development, however, is unsustainable for economic, social, and environmental reasons, and a sustainable model of development is likely to require a more egalitarian income distribution.

The second essay examines the macroeconomic structure of the Chinese economy, and argues that China's current model of development led by exports and investment is not sustainable. The accumulation of economic, social, and environmental contradictions could potentially lead to a major crisis for China and the global economy. This essay proposes a progressive agenda based on the creation of a massive public employment program that could help China move towards a more equitable and ecologically sustainable model of development.

The last essay discusses the interplay between the rise of China in the global economy and the current climate emergency by considering alternative growth scenarios for the Chinese economy. The results show that next-to-zero economic growth will be required to achieve the minimum emission reduction targets required to mitigate the climate crisis. The traditional development models based on the intensive use of fossil fuels are no longer sustainable, and they are threatening to provoke a global ecological collapse endangering the survival of humanity. This clearly indicates that China needs to revise its approach to development. Only a new development strategy focused on social and environmental progress, rather than economic growth, can provide hope for the future of humanity.
