Thesis (M.A.)--Prescott College, 2009.
Many wilderness therapy programs simulate indigenous life skills, practices, and traditions. Examples of these simulated indigenous knowledge settings are: use of ceremonies, rites of passage, "primitive" survival skills and learning based on the natural world. I believe wilderness therapy programs could offer a more effective context for growth and change through better knowledge and utilization of indigenous knowledge modalities. By acknowledging and understanding the foundation of wilderness therapy is generally indigenous knowledge much depth can be added to these powerful programs. This thesis is designed to create that connection to indigenous knowledge and offers a tangible approach to increasing program effectiveness. As wilderness therapy programs are driven by field guides, this thesis is directed and dedicated to them.
