Thesis (M.S.)--University of Arkansas, 2009.
Bermudagrass (Cynodon spp. Rich.) and zoysiagrass ( Zoysia spp. Willd.) are two of the most commonly used turfgrass species on golf course fairways and tees in Arkansas. However, little published research is available comparing commonly used cultivars of bermudagrass and zoysiagrass. Therefore, the objectives of this research were to quantify the clipping yield, scalping tendency, golf ball lie, divot recovery, divot resistance, as well as to evaluate the effects of shade and traffic on bermudagrass and zoysiagrass cultivars. This study was initiated at the Arkansas Agricultural Research and Extension Center, in Fayetteville, AR in the summers of 2008 and 2009 using five bermudagrass cultivars (Patriot, Princess 77, Riviera, Tifsport, and Tifway) as well as seven cultivars of zoysiagrass (Cavalier, Diamond, El Toro, Meyer, Palisades, Zenith, and Zorro). The cultivars producing the lowest clipping yields were Diamond and Meyer zoysiagrass, while Princess 77 and Tifway bermudagrass and Palisades zoysiagrass had the highest clipping yields. Patriot and Tifsport bermudagrass had the greatest scalping. Tifsport, Tifway, and Patriot bermudagrass, and Diamond zoysiagrass had the best ball lie in unmown conditions, while Palisades and Zenith zoysiagrass had the poorest ball lie in unmown conditions. All cultivars had similar ball lie in mown conditions. The cultivars generally with the fastest time to 50% divot recovery were Princess 77 and Riviera bermudagrass and El Toro and Palisades zoysiagrass Cavalier, Meyer, and Zenith zoysiagrass generally had the slowest time to 50% divot recovery. Highest divot resistance was from Cavalier, Diamond, and Zorro zoysiagrass, while Princess 77 and Riviera bermudagrass and Meyer and Palisades zoysiagrass had the lowest divot resistance. Cultivars with the highest coverage after two years of growth in continuous shade were Cavalier, Diamond, El Toro, Meyer, Palisades and Zorro zoysiagrass, as well as Princess 77, and Riviera bermudagrass. Patriot and Tifsport bermudagrass and Zenith zoysiagrass had the lowest coverage in non-trafficked shaded areas. Some cultivars performed similar to others when trafficked in full-sun but had less coverage than other cultivars in the shade, such as Patriot bermudagrass and Zenith zoysiagrass. However, Patriot bermudagrass and Zenith zoysiagrass also had reduced coverage compared to other cultivars when trafficked for six-weeks in full-sun. Princess 77 and Riviera bermudagrass, as well as Cavalier, Meyer, and Zorro zoysiagrass had the highest coverage when trafficked in both shade and full-sun. These findings provide the necessary information to allow golf course superintendents and sports field managers to better select cultivars and species that will improve playing conditions while decreasing maintenance inputs and costs.
