Studies have shown that many information technology (IT) projects achieve success, while many more do not. Further, researchers have identified various causes of this problem and have suggested remedies. However, these studies have not focused on the nature of the relationship between trust and success in IT projects. Consequently, this study explored the role of trust between clients and contractors and its impact on success of IT projects. The theoretical foundation of the study drew from Giffin's theory of trust and Mayer, Davis, and Schoorman's model of trust. The goal of the study was to determine what defines trust between clients and contractors in IT projects, to determine if and to what extent trust is a factor in IT project success, and to identify how IT project managers (PMs) measure success. A concurrent mixed method approach involving survey research was employed using a simple random sample of 310 members of the Project Management Institute Information Systems Specific Interest Group. ANOVA was used to demonstrate that contractor and client ability, benevolence, and integrity were all factors significantly related to success in IT projects. Themes extracted from open ended interview data, such as reliance on the integrity and ability of others, were used to extend and explain the quantitative findings. The combined results supported the conclusion that an environment of trust between clients and contractors is a factor that project managers can use to increase the chances of success in IT projects. The results of this study can be used to create project environments that promote trust and create a mutually beneficial understanding between stakeholders, potentially resulting in increased stakeholder satisfaction, improved working conditions, and higher rates of success for IT projects.
