Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Los Angeles, 2010.
This dissertation investigates how early modern Frenchmen constructed notions of the "Orient" by focusing on French interactions with Persia from the seventeenth century to the era of Montesquieu's Persian Letters in the early eighteenth century. It focuses on French representations of Persia in travel literature, contemporary "translations" of Persian texts, and prints and paintings with special attention to the Persian state visit to France in 1715. Employing the methods of diplomatic, intellectual and cultural history, this study uncovers how the French understood Persia but also advances our knowledge of the French monarchy and court life. Above all, my investigation illuminates our understanding of early modern France by revealing how it defined itself in relation to Persia and the rest of the East.

This study argues that the French relationship with Persia was more complex and varied than current notions of "Orientalism" would lead one to expect. Louis XIV's courtiers and French scholars saw in Persia a society characterized by courtesy or honnetete like France. They believed that Persians were more disposed toward Christianity than their Ottoman neighbors and enjoyed fairy tales set in Persia. The visits of "Oriental" ambassadors to Louis XIV provided occasions for the construction of the image of "Oriental" countries. During the visit of the Persian ambassador in 1715, diplomatic protocol created tensions between French expectations of Persians. The visit further stimulated the French appetite for all things Persian. Persia functioned as a mirror of France but the image it reflected was not always flattering. During the Regency of Louis XV, a much more negative image of Persia emerged, an image which would support Montesquieu's critical vision of Asian despotism and his satire of the French court.
