Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Binghamton, 2001.
The aim of this dissertation is to examine the development of the system of art education in Morocco during the French colonial Protectorate, 1912--1956. In this context, I will also explore the hypothesis that France, in its position as a ruling colonial power, used state sponsored art education to enhance its cultural hegemony over one of its principal colonial possessions. The primary focus of the research is on the system of art education designed by the French for the majority of Moroccans, including the vocational schools, the open workshops created within the Service of Youth and Sports, and the Casablanca School of Fine Arts---institutions which involved craft training and fine arts.

The principle goal of the analysis is to explicate the substructures of thought and feeling that have shaped the way the French approached Moroccan arts and crafts and contributed to the formation of Morocco's visual culture. The argument is also made that, throughout the process of creating these schools, no one institution held a monopoly on truth or insight. Yet, no matter how different this form of art education was, it had a an immense impact on the attitudes of both Moroccan and French people toward Morocco's arts.

A key to entangling the role of these educational institutions is to be found in the intervention made by French women in the traditional forms of women's craft production and this theme is given particular attention as also is the role Moroccans performed in maintaining these colonial institutions. The dissertation concludes with an evaluation of the attempts made by Moroccan artists towards the decolonization of their visual culture from the imprint of French hegemony.
