Thesis (M.S.)--Purdue University, 2009.
This thesis reports the results of a study that examined the effectiveness of web-based injunctive messages on improving student grades. Injunctive messages are used for conveying social approval or disapproval. The experimental study was carried out with students who were enrolled in the course CNIT 13600 (Introduction to Computer Technology and Applications ) at Purdue University. Students were randomly selected and placed in one of four experimental groups; each of the groups received different types of injunctive messages with the help of a website where they were able to track the progress of their grades throughout the semester. The injunctive messages seemed to have a positive effect on student performance based on the qualitative data; however, quantitatively the results did not show any significant differences in the scores between the three treatments and the control group for the six weeks of the study.
