Thesis (Ed.Sp.)--University of Central Missouri, 2008.
The gender gap in reading achievement has been well documented (Gurian & Stevens, 2005; Smith & Wilhelm, 2006); boys under perform girls in reading. Factors that affect boys' reading achievement include biological differences between girls and boys, teacher gender, and the language arts curriculum. Strategies teachers and librarians can use to improve boys' literacy levels include providing entry points to literacy, giving readers control over their reading selections, and letting student interests shape the curriculum and library collection. In order to create a collection that appeals to male readers, seventh graders were surveyed about their reading interests and asked to evaluate the current library media center collection to determine whether the collection is meeting users' needs. Differences in male/female responses were noted. Circulation statistics were also used to identify high-use areas of the collection. Data from the survey and circulation statistics were combined to formulate a boy-friendly collection development plan.
