Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Toronto (Canada), 1985.
This study attempts to offer both an account and a critique of recent French writers and critics on the works of James Joyce and Friedrich Holderlin. In the introduction the problems of such "meta- criticism" are discussed and an attempt is made to define the field in a non-intrinsic and sociological manner, following the thought of Thomas S. Kuhn. The first chapter gives a brief survey of the German reception of Holderlin and of the Anglo-American Joyce interpreta- tions. Chapter two describes the specificity of the French reading of Holderlin. In the sixties in Germany, Heidegger's readings of Holderlin were being replaced by the political interpretations inspired by the Frankfurt School, while in France, critics came to adopt the Heideggerian Holderlin under the influence of Beda Allemann's Heidegger und Holderlin and of the Lacanian reading of Laplanche. In the late sixties left-wing critics adopted this reading and added to it a political dimension and in the mid-seventies marxism and maoism were replaced by a religious anti-totalitarianism that comes closer to Heidegger's politics. In the third chapter the same development can be observed in the French Joyce interpretations which start in the late sixties with the second (and political) reading. The last chapter identifies the major themes of contemporary French critics as romantic: the freedom taken with the primary text, the emphasis on the single word and on the fragment, the idealist doctrine that all is text and that texts are auto-referential. The basic problematic these ideas have in common is that of the authority of the interpreter. After finding that this type of criticism does not leave room for a real critique, a sociological hypothesis is offered to explain why it could develop in France. The conclusion shows the similarities between deconstruction and romanticism and finds Heidegger's philosophy as one of the major mediators between the two. The source of the romantico-idealist doctrines can be located in the misreading of Kant's intellektuale Anschauung by Fichte, Schelling, Schlegel, Novalis and Holderlin.
