Thesis (M.S.)--Lehigh University, 2010.
This thesis proposes that phonological features are selected and not merely activated prior to speech production. In Experiment 1, speakers were induced to expect certain onsets and then produced words whose onsets differed only in voice or in place of articulation from the expected ones. Words with onsets that differed only in voice showed a latency advantage over those that differed in place, suggesting a different status for these features in planning. In Experiment 2, word pairs differing in only one or in several features of the initial or final consonant were continuously recited for 5 seconds. Relative to controls, phonological competition was greater when feature overlap was high (a phonemic similarity effect), supporting theories in which features feed back to phonemes during production. These findings warrant further exploration of the representation of features in planning and execution of speech.
