Thesis (Ed.D.)--Teachers College, Columbia University, 2010.
As Korea has been dramatically changing to a multicultural society, students in learning environments are also becoming more diverse. In this changing context, online learning environments could play a significant role, providing a desirable learning opportunity for multicultural students. However, as students with various cultural backgrounds participate in an online learning environment, it is important to accommodate various backgrounds. To build a culturally sensitive online learning environment, the role of the teacher in multicultural online learning environments should be emphasized.

This study investigated the teacher's role in a multicultural online learning environment based on surveys from Korean students and foreign students (students foreign to Korea) who are attending a university in Korea. The study subsequently looked at the differences in how Korean students and foreign students viewed the roles of teachers. In addition, this research also explored characteristics of foreign students that may affect their perception of the teacher's role.

From the results of this study, it was found that students identified five different aspects of the teacher's roles: pedagogical, managerial, technical, affective, and differentiating. Both Korean students and foreign students had a similar order of priority regarding these five aspects of the teacher's roles. However, foreign students thought the teacher's pedagogical, managerial, technical, and differentiating roles were more important than Korean students. Finally, specific foreign students' characteristics were found to be a significant predictor in their perceptions of the teacher's role: prior technology experience, cultural characteristics, and hours of daily Internet use. Interestingly, the Korean language ability of foreign students' was not found to be a significant predictor in their perception of the teacher's roles.

This study sheds light on multicultural education in Korea based on understanding the teacher's role in multicultural online learning environments. With the results of this study, the Korean educational community can gain further insight into the teacher's role in multicultural online learning environments. Moreover, teachers can learn what is necessary to become culturally competent by acknowledging the differences between students who come with different cultural backgrounds in order to provide multicultural students with a better learning environment in Korea.
