Limited research has addressed the heart rate response of individuals while playing the Nintendo Wii(TM) Sport. The purpose of the study was to investigate the heart rate response of individuals while playing the game of boxing on the Nintendo Wii(TM). Specifically, the researcher wanted to determine if those participating in a game of Wii(TM) boxing would be able to perform at an intensity level great enough to reach their individual target heart rate (THR) zone. The study included 75 subjects ranging in age from 18 to 48. These subjects were placed into six fitness categories, ranging from superior to very poor, based upon their performance on a Maximal Graded Exercise Test (Maximal GXT). The subjects then participated in a 30-minute game of Wii(TM) boxing. The results of the study revealed that over two-thirds (69%) of the subjects reached their THR zone during the Wii(TM) boxing session. Based upon this study, the Nintendo Wii(TM) game of boxing appears to be an acceptable form of exercise for those individuals desiring moderate-intensity physical activity.
