Thesis (M.S.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2010.
When used appropriately imagery can be a very powerful mental skill with positive effects on mental preparedness and performance. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the ways in which female college gymnasts use PETTLEP-based imagery (Holmes & Collins, 2001). Three focus groups were conducted to investigate the experience gymnasts had with PETTLEP-based imagery, their preferred components of this type of imagery, their perceptions about its effectiveness, and the difficulties they encountered with it. An inductive content analysis led to seven higher order themes describing the experience gymnasts had with PETTLEP-based imagery: (1) PETTLEP-based imagery was worthwhile, (2) it created a realistic experience, (3) it was a personalized experience, (4) PETTLEP-based imagery was useful in practice for skill development and refining, (5) it helped ensure a comprehensive mental preparation for meets, (6) gymnasts encountered challenges when using this type of imagery, and (7) they made several recommendations for future use of PETTLEP-based imagery.
