The traditional track cycling warm-up (TWU) prior to a sprint event involves multiple sprints over a 50 min warm-up which could result in significant fatigue and decrease performance. The purpose of this research was to compare TWU to an experimental warm-up (EWU) and examine the fatiguing effects of both using electrically elicited twitch contractions and the 30 s Wingate test. The Wingate test used a 1 min lead-in at 80% of optimal cadence, which was demonstrated to improve PPO compared to the common method using a lower 50 rpm cadence. After warm-up there was a significant difference (p<0.05) in peak active torque between trials (EWU=94.6+/-2.4%; TWU=86.5+/-3.3%). Wingate performance in EWU (PPO=1390+/-80 W; Work=29.1+/-1.2kJ) was significantly higher (p<0.01) than in TWU (PPO=1303+/-89 W; Work=27.7+/-1.2kJ). The traditional track cyclists' warm-up results in significant fatigue which impairs sprint performance. A shorter and lower intensity warm-up similar to EWU is recommended to limit muscular fatigue.
