Thesis (M.S.)--Southwest Minnesota State University, 2010.
Developing and maintaining motivation in high school athletes is a constant concern for coaches everywhere. Motivation is shown as energy, intention, and persistence for a particular task. Motivation can be divided into six levels, varying in degree of intention/energy and level of self-determination. Self Determination Theory indicates three needs that all individuals need met in order to display motivation - autonomy, competence, relatedness. In sport, these needs are met, or not met, through the motivational climate created - either a task-oriented or ego-oriented environment. Athletes at a south suburban high school in Minnesota were surveyed to assess different aspects of motivation. The Athlete Motivation Factor Questionnaire was designed to assess what motivates athletes to participate in their selected sport. The Athlete Motivation Non-Sport Factor Questionnaire looks into factors outside the sport environment that affect athlete motivation. The Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire-v.2 assesses factors within the sport environment that affect motivation. Enjoyment, competition, and competence proved to be significant motivators for participation in sport for nearly all athletes. Of the non-sport factors, four of the five proved relevant to at least 20% of the athletes. The PMCSQ-2 data showed that all three programs effectively create a task-oriented environment, but there were some dimensions of the ego-oriented climate that each sport could improve on. Through this research, coaches at this school foster high athlete motivation by balancing the drive to compete and improve with a practice climate that is enjoyable and focuses on the task-oriented dimensions of the perceived motivational climate.
