Thesis (M.S.Ed.)--Northern Illinois University, 2010.
The primary purpose of this study was to identify the effects of supplementing with a lactate sport drink (Cytomax) on power outputs of Division I women soccer players as compared to a carbohydrate sport drink (Gatorade). Twelve participants (19.8 +/- 1.1 yr, 166.7 +/- 5.6 cm, and 61.5 +/- 4.5 kg) from Northern Illinois Women's soccer team participated in this study. Each participant completed a practice day, and three trials of the Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAT). The three trials of the WAT completed were a baseline WAT, a WAT completed with a carbohydrate supplement, and a WAT completed with a lactate supplement. Each trial was separated by 48 hours. The one-way repeated measures ANOVA found no significant difference in peak power output (W) (x□baseline = 571.7, SD = 87.6; x□carbohydrate = 551.8, SD = 60.5; x□ lactate = 554.3, SD = 80.8; F1.42, 15.61 = 0.575, p = 0.52), average power output (W) (x□baseline = 428.3, SD = 44.3; x□carbohydrate = 420.9, SD = 32.8; x□ lactate = 424.8, SD = 50.3; F2, 22 = 0.326, p = 0.73), and power drop (%) (x□baseline = 52.3, SD = 18.5; x□carbohydrate = 48.7, SD = 6.3; x□lactate = 48.0, SD = 7.2, F1.42, 15.62 = 0.496, p = 0.56) between the three WATs completed. The 2 x 2 (time by drink), repeated measures ANOVA found no significant interaction between pre- and post-glucose values (mg/dl) between the supplemental drinks (Xpre-gatorade = 89.7, SD = 9.8; Xpost-gatorade = 91.5, SD = 13.9; Xpre-cytomax = 91.4, SD = 18.2; Xpost-lactate = 89.1, SD = 15.5; F1, 11 = 1.13, p = 0.31). The results indicated that when comparing the effects of supplementing with a carbohydrate sport drink (Gatorade) on power outputs (W) as compared to a carbohydrate sport lactate sport drink (Cytomax), fatigue index (power drop %), and glucose (mg/dl) values of Division I Women soccer players there is no significant difference between the two drinks. It is illustrated that Gatorade and Cytomax both slightly increased the availability of plasma glucose; Cytomax increased it to a greater extent for the sample. Also, Cytomax did not significantly increase the availability of plasma glucose, glucose may be spared due to the increased availability of lactate in blood circulation and working muscle (through Cytomax), thus increasing direct lactate oxidation in the working muscle.
