Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawai'I at Manoa, 2010.
Cultural variation in tasks of low interdependence is investigated through two field studies and one experimental study. The field studies examined the role of cultural diversity on team performance in baseball, which is defined as a task of low interdependence. In the first field study individual players' performances from the World Baseball Classic (WBC) were compared to Major League Baseball (MLB) seasons. Statistical analysis determined differences between westerners' and non-westerners' performances when playing on culturally homogenous and heterogeneous teams. As hypothesized, westerners' individual performances while on culturally homogenous and heterogeneous teams were not statistically different, while non-westerners performed statistically better as members of culturally homogenous teams.

The second field study expanded the level of analysis to the team-level by using the Nippon Professional Baseball League. Previous research indicated that team performances of U.S. baseball teams were not significantly related to team diversity, but findings from the second field study determined that the performances of Japanese baseball teams were negatively related to team diversity.

These previously undiscovered differences between westerners and nonwesterners are the first empirical evidence to suggest that diversity influences performance differently between western and non-western cultures in tasks of low interdependence. Findings from the two field studies are in agreement with the theory of individualism and collectivism, which suggests that individualists (westerners) do not differentiate between ingroup and outgroup members, whereas collectivists (non- westerners) do differentiate and perform better when they are with their ingoup members in homogenous groups.

The third study examined perceptions of task interdependence in baseball as a potential source of cultural variation in group dynamics. Using an experimental design, the cultural dimensions of individualism and collectivism were measured along with research participants' perceptions of task interdependence dimensions of scope, resource, and criticality. As hypothesized, aspects of collectivism were positively related to perceptions of task interdependence. In particular, horizontal collectivism was found to have a strong relationship to task interdependence, particularly in the dimensions of task interdependence scope and resource. Findings suggest that the results from the field studies may be due to different cultural perceptions of task interdependence in baseball.
