Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Idaho, 2010.
It was the purpose of this study to examine two specific scenarios: 1. The extent of H-reflex modulation occurring during tasks of differing postural complexity such as sitting, standing, and a managing a sway-reference support surface, and 2. The effectiveness of acute whole body vibration (WBV) in modulating the H-reflex during each of the aforementioned postural tasks. Subjects consisted of 21 healthy college aged students. These subjects were asked participate in voluntary stimulation of the tibial nerve in order to examine the neurophysiological responses following changes in postural complexity and WBV. Specifically, H-reflexes and M-waves were examined through the use surface electromyography.

Results the repeated measures analysis of variance indicated a significant difference between seated and standing conditions according to their impact on H-reflex modulation. Furthermore, a trend was present indicating that H-reflex modulation may have been further enhanced following WBV, although this trend failed to reach statistical significance. In the absence of WBV there was a significant gender effect as well, indicating that men suppressed the H-reflex to a greater extent than did their female counterparts.

The findings from this study indicate a modulation of the H-reflex in response to changing postural complexity, gender, and to some extent, the presence of WBV. Consequently, there appears to be a need for future research examining H-reflex responses of individuals following WBV, especially as it pertains to postural positioning and gender.
