Thesis (M.A.)--Long Island University, The Brooklyn Center, 2010.
The purpose of my theory paper is to examine the economic structure and societal role of indie (short for independent) record labels in the digital sphere. Historically indies have been championed for presenting more 'authentic' forms of music than major labels. The purpose of the paper is to examine where such connotations developed from and if these beliefs remain in the highly digitized marketplace of the music industry. The production section of my thesis is to outline the business and creative practices of a small artist-owned-artist ran co-operative record label that I am involved in; Alce Recording Group.
