This research paper examines similarities and differences between Korean and American students' practice strategies and teachers' expectations for their students' practice habits To do this, this study examines various productive piano practice techniques from the perspectives of undergraduate students majoring in piano performance and their studio teachers. Subjects were 30 Korean students, 26 American students, 16 Korean studio teachers, and 15 American studio teachers from selected universities across South Korea and the United States Subjects each completed an anonymous and voluntary survey about their use of piano practice techniques. Questions centered on students' understanding and utilization of practice techniques and teachers' recommendations for most effective practice strategies. Results were compared to show similarities and differences in approaches by the participating groups.

Most students were well aware of a variety of practice techniques, though some techniques were rarely utilized. Students in both countries chose the following practice techniques to be most effective: slow practice, isolated sectional practice, repetition, practice with each hand separately, variation in tempo, and self evaluation. Teachers recommended a similar range of practice techniques that students needed to use more often, and added the techniques of analysis, mental practice, and experimentation.

The most important differences found in the study were those between Korean students and American students regarding practice routine and between Korean students and Korean teachers regarding teachers' practice instruction. Only 14% of Korean students had practice routines as compared to 68% of American students. 57% of Korean teachers answered that they always gave practice instructions to their students, while only 19% of Korean students shared this view. Therefore, this study recommends that teachers make more effort to teach their students how to practice with the strategies they want them to use.

This study provided an opportunity to identify the variety of views held by piano students and their teachers regarding practice strategies and to observe differences between teachers and students and between Koreans and Americans. This study's findings, and the survey, may help teachers better understand their students' practice habits and provide an incentive for students to examine their practice strategies.
