This grounded theory dissertation explains people's behaviors as they go through voluntary change. Moving on emerged from the data as the overriding pattern of behavior accounting for how individuals resolve their main concern of moving successfully through voluntary change despite sometimes facing overwhelming odds.

Moving on is a five-stage spiraling process of voluntary change. Valuing and timing affects people's behaviors and decisions throughout each stage of the process. Valuing consists of weighting and instincting, where weighting is the worth or value people assign to relevant aspects of change, and instincting happens when people make a decision to move on in a nonchalant manner. This leads to value-based decision-making. People move on when the time is right.

The process of moving on begins with an awareness stage which is a cognitive phase when people realize they are either moving toward or away from something. At the end of this stage people make a decision to either do nothing, perch, or continue on. The second stage, seeking a right fit, occurs when people explore their moving on options. By looking at vehicles for change and using value-based decision-making people are able to seek a right fit. However, acting upon that right fit does not happen until people reach their tipping point, the third stage. Deciding to move toward action or not is a decision people make when they either impromptu, come to know, or deliberate over information. The fourth stage explains the journey, decisions people may make as they smooth sail and/or snag, factors affecting each, and coping strategies. The fifth, and final stage, explains how the moving on experience draws to a close. This is an evaluative time when people consider the success, or lack, of their moving on experience and they get ready for their next moving on experience. Thus, the cycle of moving on starts again as people become aware of their desire for change.
