Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2010.
Research on teams has been inconclusive about the demographic and cognitive variables most conducive to team effectiveness. As a result, this study explored the correlation of demographic and cognitive variables with team effectiveness. The demographic variables were defined as gender, age, education level, team tenure, team experience (aside from sports and recreation teams), and personal preference of working with a team or individually. The cognitive variable of a shared mental model was comprised of team-related and task-related items. Team effectiveness was defined by team commitment, team performance, and team communication. Self-managed student teams from a small southeastern college were used to determine these relationships. A quantitative analysis determined that the level of team-related and task-related sharedness possessed by a team was highly correlated with team effectiveness, whereas, demographic composition of the team was not.
