Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Alabama, 1984.
This study was an investigation of (1) the extent to which anger is a psychological response to a clinical diagnosis of genital herpes, (2) the health locus of control beliefs of patients with a clinical diagnosis of genital herpes and of those without the disease, and (3) the relationship between the herpes patient's level of anger and her health locus of control orientation. The total sample of 128 women, 18-49 years of age, included 55 women who were clinically diagnosed with genital herpes and 73 women who reported no evidence of the disease. Three instruments were used: (1) The Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scales including subscales of Internal, Chance, and Powerful Others; (2) The State-Trait Anger Scale; and (3) an investigator-constructed Demographic Data and Herpes Facts Sheet which obtained reported knowledge regarding basic facts about genital herpes and selected demographic data. In comparing the herpes patients and the non-herpes patients, no significant differences were found in their health locus of control orientations or their Trait-anger levels. There was a significant difference found, however, in the State-anger levels of the two groups. A low positive relationship between State and Trait anger was found in both groups. In the herpes group, neither the State-anger nor the Trait-anger level could be accurately predicted by a knowledge of an individual's health locus of control orientation. This study has identified anger as a psychological factor in the female patient's response to a clinical diagnosis of genital herpes. Both health locus of control beliefs and Trait anger were documented as having no significant relationship to the individual's anger level at the time of herpes diagnosis. A high level of sexual activity was indicated among the total sample, and a low level of awareness of the respondents' exposure to genital herpes was reported. Of the herpes patients, 30-48 percent gave incorrect or "don't know" responses to questions regarding some important facts about the disease. This study has offered to the counseling profession important insight into two variables that are related to the diagnosis of genital herpes.Subjects--Topical Terms:
