520 $a The first essay examines the determinants of performance improvement of mergers from 1994 to 2006. The main result shows that the removal of barriers to entry allowed relatively efficiently run retail banking franchises to expand, and less efficient ones to exit, which resulted in performance improvement. Other potential contributors to performance change (e.g., scale effects, higher market shares, cost savings from branching closures, learning effects) do not seem to be important.
520 $a The second essay identifies the relative importance of various effects on performance for different types of banks between 1994 and 2007. I find that managerial quality, as well as persistent bank relationships, matters most for performance for all banks. I also find that geographic market or business focus effects are more important for big-sized banks relative to small-sized banks. Since extending operating markets or focusing on retail banking is a key managerial choice of bigger banks, the result implies that the endogeneity problem is a bigger issue for bigger banks.
520 $a The third essay examines the effect of a merger of Fleet and BankBoston in 1999 on competition within the regional loan market. I find that a local monopolist in New England middle-market lending, FleetBoston, did not cut its price too much in spite of increased competition due to significant entry by Wachovia. The result suggests the slow building of bank-customer relationships limits competition in the loan market.
